Members, We need you!!
As the KPHA Board prepares for getting the organization going even
more successfully in 2010 one of the efforts will be to get membership
more involved. The
Willingness To Serve form is a volunteer form for you
to fill out and get involved in public health advocacy, education,
and networking throughout next year! We need every member
to fill one out and return it to the KPHA office. Let’s see if we
can beat North Carolina undefined the NCPHA get at least 50 of these
in every year from their membership!!
KPHA Board prepares for 2010!
The 2009-2010 KPHA Board members and staff met on October 1st with a national well known Association Consultant, Bob Harris. This training was made possible by a grant from the Sunflower Foundation. Here are a couple of comments from members of the Board:
Eldonna Chesnut, 2010 President: Everything was useful! I took away more useful information from this retreat than the previous two combined. I now have a "to do" list to use for starting off my year as KPHA president.
Heather Heneke, President Elect: I appreciated his having "studied" the board before the meeting and his "from the balcony" objective overview that he shared with us. I also appreciate his sharing the legal in's and outs of board membership.
Annette Graham, Elder Issues Section Chair: I liked the focus on and discussion of the Mission and our responsibilities as board members. I also really appreciated the great resource material that was provided: the laminated sheet on Board Responsibilities and the presenters draft our KPHA Strategic Plan.
APHA Annual Meeting in Philadelphia a Success!
Over twenty five Kansas public health professionals traveled to
the great city of brotherly love and sisterly affection to learn
more about public health research, practice, and in general to have
a great networking experience. If you were one of those who
presented a power point and would like your slide show added to
the KPHA website, send it to director@kpha.us!
Here’s a list of attendees from Kansas: Rouba Assi, Eldonna Chesnut, DeeAnn DeRoin. Linda Frazier. Jean Hall, Jamie Hunt, Tatiana Lin, Janice Moore, Dorothy Nary, Shirley Orr, Michael Ramcharan, Cathy Stueckemann, Andrew Ward, Heather Winklepleck, Ruth Wetta-Hall, Melissa Armstrong, Won Choi, Tanya Honderick, Michael Taylor, Doug Bradham, Betty Campbell, and Will Evans Here are just a few comments from your President and Treasurer and myself: Sonja Armbruster: Name at least one important item from a Scientific Session or a General Session Speaker that will help you in your job? I learned how others are using their NPHPSP experiences and heard an interesting corporate partnership with local health for QI training. What did you learn from the Expo that will help you in your job? I learned about a peer-to-peer pre-conception health program with grant funds available from the Office of Minority Health. What did you learn from any experience at APHA that would be a suggestion to help improve public health in Kansas? I learned some tips about advocacy from staffers who work in Senate offices. They basically said Public Health is too quiet and we should ask for “Congressionally Directed Spending” (AKA earmarks). They offered tips about making visits at legislators’ offices likeundefinedbring only one page, give them stories, build relationships, and expect a visit (even with staff) will likely only be 10-15 minutes.
Linda Frazier: Name at least one important item from a Scientific Session or a General Session Speaker that will help you in your job? It’s hard to pick just one thing. I really enjoyed the learning institute that I attended the afternoon of the first day. It was “Strategies for Local and State Health Departments to Reduce the Negative Impacts of a Distressed Economy.” They discussed ratio and trend analysis in public health. This is an area that I don’t know much about, that is very important. What did you learn from the Expo that will help you in your job? I was able to find a resource of books that are written together in both easy to read English and Spanish with beautiful illustrations on a variety of health related topics to share with our Farm Worker Program. What did you learn from any experience at APHA that would be a suggestion to help improve public health in Kansas? The networking with other states was invaluable, and I will continue to use several as resources. Do you want to share anything that would be helpful in particular to helping KPHA grow and thrive? Look for best practices that have worked for other State associations and then find how those best practices could work for Kansas. Keep our vision and mission, and our organizational strategic plan simple so we can share it with the membership, and they can identify with it.
Elaine Schwartz: Name at least one important item from a Scientific Session or a General Session Speaker that will help you in your job? I learned that FL, MI, WA, and TX have a Qrtly State Assn. Peer Reviewed Public Health Journal that helps students, researchers, and practitioners in public health in those states. What did you learn from the Expo that will help you in your job? I learned that HRSA is going to give out more funding for educational projects and we should apply. What did you learn from any experience at APHA that would be a suggestion to help improve public health in Kansas? I learned that AZ put together an educational event for businesses in their state using “Get Ready” and CDC information for Preparednessundefinedit helped the statewide business community and the public health network. Do you want to share anything that would be helpful in particular to helping KPHA grow and thrive? In addition to the above, I learned that in a couple of states, i.e. Connecticut and Michigan that their insurance companies such as BCBS/AETNA and others such as MERCK/Beldon Foundation funded their affiliate’s immunization projects and environmental projects.
Watch for more answers from other attendees to these questions in the upcoming December Quarterly Newsletter!! And, the articles of the three poster winners from the KPHA Fall Conference! If you attended APHA in Philly and did not see your name in the list, please let me know, so we can add you to the Newsletter!

Message from President Elect, Eldonna Chesnut
Kansas Action for Children and the Coalition for School Readiness have taken on the child care campaign to inspect registered homes. The campaign is in support of legislation introduced last year by KDHE (HB 2223) that would permit greater oversight of registered family day care homes. A website is now operational www.inspecttherest.com and a full-page ad was in the November 15, 2009 Sunday Topeka Capitol Journal. A big thank you goes to Leadell Ediger for linking with KAC and the Coalition for School Readiness to enable the campaign to become a reality. In addition, a big thank you goes to Rachel Berroth for compiling the data that is the basis for moving forward on protections for children!
Encore – KPHA Public Health Retirees group - holds Kick off Meeting
The first meeting was held during the KPHA annual fall conference.
Even though the group was small in numbers they were big on excitement
and ideas. Some ideas that this group brainstormed included:
advocacy for Public Health issues, participating in special projects,
serving as resources for legislators on PH issues, serving as “the
voice” for Public health issues, and teaching webinars/classes on
public health basics.
If you are a retiree from the PH workforce you are invited
to become part of this group as well. You must be a KPHA member
- dues for retirees are only $20/year! We promise not to take
up a large amount of your time. Your KPHA board values the
vast knowledge you have gained over the years and don’t want the
organization to ose this. If you have other ideas/questions
and/or want to join this group please contact Eldonna.Chesnut@jocogov.org
– KPHA 2010 President. Please help us grow this group by providing
names of recent public health retirees or soon to be retirees so
we can personally invite them to join.
We look forward to an exciting year ahead and being able to
pull from the knowledge base/experience/time of our Encore Members.

Car Fire Alert!
Car Fire From IPhone - This is a picture and story of damage it can cause … our 2007 Suburban.
This fire resulted from leaving an Iphone charger/docking station
plugged into the car outlet. It overheated and started a fire,
while parked in our garage. PLEASE unplug anything you have
in your car outlets once you turn off your car! We were VERY
fortunate that we accidentally found the fire, at 11pm, before going
to bed and before it spread to the house.
